Our primary responsibility is our Food Rescue and Giveaway ministry. We run our food program with donated items and "fresh rescue" for low income families, the disabled, and homeless in order to provide four days worth of food at any time which includes fresh produce, milk, yogurt, eggs, and meat. According to America's Second Harvest, over 41 billion pounds of food have been wasted this year. Fresh fruits and vegetables, fluid milk, grain products, and sweeteners (mostly sugar and high-fructose corn syrup) account for two-thirds of the losses. 16 billion pounds of milk and 14 billion pounds of grain products make up part of that loss; food that could have gone to millions. YAS has seven volunteer drivers who use two donated vans and their personal cars to pick up fresh food throughout all of Orange County every week that otherwise would have been thrown away, and we then deliver it to those in need. Some of our donators are currently Albertsons, Gelsons Food Market, Pacific Ranch Market, Ralphs, Trader Joes, Pizza Hut, Sunny Delight, San Luis Sausage Company, Mattern Meat and Deli, as well as Second Harvest Food Bank. We also deliver to Westview Services (disabled group home) in the Westminster area, Orange Elderly Center, and to several low income Churches throughout Orange County that do not have the volunteer base that YAS has.
People in need line up outside of our facility and wait to receive their food every Wednesday starting at 5am and we don't even open our doors until 8:30am. As they come in, they are instantly provided with bags full of fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, canned good, bread, basic dairy products, juice, pizza, and a variety of desserts. Every month we feed over 5,000 people.
